There are no special requirements for bottling edible oil, while it is very important to produce a convenience packaging with ergonomic shapes (special grips), light weighted even when large sizes are concerned (possibility to insert a lateral handle).
The main requirements of an edible oil container are:
• Attractive packaging and unique shapes design for strong product identity & visibility
• Lightweight packaging. Find the best compromise between extreme light-weight and mechanical resistance to support filling line handling, storage and transportation.
• Ergonomic shapes to improve grip of consumers
• Big convenience sizes, and big containers for dispenser

In case of big size containers (up to 30 liters), they can be produced on the SFL and ECS range of machines.

Special containers
• Large size containers: PET is becoming the most flexible and cost effective material for the manufacturing of large size containers. 5, 10 liters PET containers for water and edible oil are the standard today in the market. With the increasing cost of metals and resins, nowadays PET solutions for converting tin plate or HDPE cans and jars, for 15 liters, 20 liters and even 30 liters, assures very important cost savings in row materials and in investments for production technology. The ability to design innovative packaging and to manufacture preforms and containers for such big sizes are the key for this new market trend.
• Oval containers: Oval container means a container with different base length and width. It can be centered neck or off-centered neck. The technological challenge in the production of the oval containers is to achieve a uniform material distribution all around the bottle. The technology required to compensate the different radial stretching ratio on the short and long sides of the bottle makes use of a preferential heating oven equipped with infrared lamps dedicated to reheat the preforms asymmetrically: in the oven the preforms do not rotate, so the re-heating is concentrated in two opposite sides. Some containers require also the thread to be oriented, as special closures shall be applied; it is the case of many bottle for detergents, equipped with trigger sprayer that shall be oriented in the direction of the short side. In order to give the thread the proper position vs. the bottle, the machine producing the container is equipped with a special system to orient the preforms in the correct position before entering the preferential heating oven.
• PLA containers: PLA is a polymer derived from 100% annually renewable resources such as corn. It offers more disposal options and, showing a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, is more environmentally friendly to manufacture than traditional petroleum based plastics. Furthermore it is not impacted by petroleum-based feedstock costs. Beverages and products are enhanced with bottles made from PLA polymer: market research clearly shows that consumers believe that beverages and products packaged in containers made from nature are fresher and more wholesome. Performance and the environmental attributes of bottles and labels made from PLA can provide brandowners with a strong point of differentiation.
