Milk and diary products

Products: fresh milk, ESL milk & UHT milk. Milk Based Drinks: Milk/Chocolate, Milk/Fruit, etc. Drinking yogurt; healthy Milk Products (Milk+Fiber, Milk+Omega 3, Probiotics, Milk+Vitamins)
The main requirements of a container for milk and milk-based products (mainly ESL and UHT) are:
• Ultra-clean or aseptic level compatible with low acid products
• Light: UV, visible barrier
• Aroma & flavor barrier and to a lesser extend to oxygen
• Low Flavor scalping

Special containers

Barrier Containers: In order to prolong product shelf life, containers can be produced with different type of barrier. To enhance light, humidity, CO2 and oxygen barrier properties of every type of plastic containers, several solutions are today available: the bottles can be produced with the addiction of barrier agents blended with the resin (nylon MXD6, EVOH, oxygen scavengers, nanocomposites), production of multilayer containers (PET+EVOH or PET + Nylon) or through the application of coating after bottle production. For this purpose, SIPA developed Smartcoat® solution: a new technology to apply an organic coating to the external surface of plastic containers improving its gas barrier properties. It has been conceived as a modular coating production line with an output varying from 12,000 to 36,000 containers per hour. Excellent barrier performances, good mechanical and thermal performances and fully transparency are the main features of smartcoated containers. Moreover, they are recyclable for bottle to bottle application (FDA and PETCORE approved).
Heat Set and Pasteurizable Containers: In the hot fill process, the product undergoes a “flash pasteurization“, which means it is heated to high temperatures (roughly from 120° to 140°C) for a few seconds and then it is cooled to the filling temperature which is usually between 80 °C and 90 °C. After capping, the bottles are turned upside down or tilted so that the neck and the internal part of the cap get in contact with the beverage and undergo the same bottle thermal treatment. The containers then pass through a tunnel where a shower of cold water quickly lowers the temperature of the bottles. The hot fill process requires containers which are specifically designed (heat set) to withstand high temperatures and ensure excellent performance compared with traditional containers (glass, metallic packs, multi-layer cardboard), also in light-weighting solutions. With regard to design, SIPA has paid particular attention to the neck (reinforced to avoid deformations of the top and ensure a perfect sealing), to the bottom (strengthened with special ribs) and to the sides (featuring panels to absorb the vacuum that forms naturally after filling). These panels, which are arranged on the side of the container, together with the structure of the shoulder, compensate for vacuum, help to hold the shape and therefore meet design requirements as well as production and logistical efficiency.
