Food products

Products: the range of products falling in this category is wide and differentiated: sauces, toppings, dressings, eggs-based products, peanut butter, baby-food, nutraceuticals and desserts.
Therefore, container requirements according to different products may vary. Generally speaking containers are mostly wide mouth jars, with neck diameter ranging from 60 to 110 mm. Among most common container requirements are: - Vacuum resistance (mayonnaise, paste products like peanut butter, etc.) - Resistance to hot filling or pasteurization cycle (sauces, tomato-sauces, jams & marmalades) - Oxygen barrier (tomato-sauces and sauces in general) - Water barrier for dry product (spices and similar products, biscuits, ground coffee and cocoa) - Special non-acid categories like baby food or vegetable-based preserves require “retortable” containers (100°C treatment).

Special containers

Heat Set and Pasteurizable: the hot fill process requires containers which are specifically designed (heat set) to withstand high temperatures and ensure excellent performance compared with traditional containers (glass, metallic packs, multi-layer cardboard), also in light-weighting solutions. With regard to design, SIPA has paid particular attention to the neck (reinforced to avoid deformations of the top and ensure a perfect sealing), to the bottom (strengthened with special ribs) and to the sides (featuring panels to absorb the vacuum that forms naturally after filling). These panels, which are arranged on the side of the container, together with the structure of the shoulder, compensate for vacuum, help to hold the shape and therefore meet design requirements as well as production and logistical efficiency.
Wide Mouth Containers: The use of jars is mainly dedicated to various food applications in which the human hand or a spoon shall be permitted to enter the container to catch the content. In particular it is important that when you spoon the content, the neck finish is easy to clean internally, in order to avoid residuals to remain on it. The conversion from glass jars covers the most of the applications for these containers. The main characteristics required to these jars are vacuum resistance and reduced neck finish ovality. Additionally, the typical shape of a preform for jars - short and conical – makes it difficult to handle and re-heat on 2-step blowmolders; as a consequence the integrated 1-step approach is the most appropriate technology to be utilized, in fact preforms are blown when hot, as soon as they come out from the injection mold, avoiding any issue deriving from re-heating and unscrambling.
Barrier Containers: In order to prolong product shelf life, containers can be produced with different type of barrier. To enhance light, humidity, CO2 and oxygen barrier properties of every type of plastic containers, several solutions are today available: the bottles can be produced with the addiction of barrier agents blended with the resin (nylon MXD6, EVOH, oxygen scavengers, nanocomposites), production of multilayer containers (PET+EVOH or PET + Nylon) or through the application of coating after bottle production. For this purpose, SIPA developed Smartcoat® solution: a new technology to apply an organic coating to the external surface of plastic containers improving its gas barrier properties. It has been conceived as a modular coating production line with an output varying from 12,000 to 36,000 containers per hour. Excellent barrier performances, good mechanical and thermal performances and fully transparency are the main features of smartcoated containers. Moreover, they are recyclable for bottle to bottle application (FDA and PETCORE approved).
Polypropylene Containers: PP is an interesting resin thanks to its peculiar features: water barrier, high temperature resistance and chemical inertia. For this reason, PP can access market where PET is not indicated. Thanks to its high temperature resistance, PP is also highly suitable when high hot filling temperature is required or steam sterilization (at 121°C) is needed e.g. medical and pharmaceutical and baby food industries. It is also suitable for applications requiring high humidity barrier performances, e.g. powder and soluble food.
